How to Tell Someone How You Feel (Without It Turning Into a Fight)

By the WeWow team ·

Short answerTo tell someone how you feel, pick a calm moment, start with what you want for the relationship, describe what happened and how you felt using 'I' statements, then say what you'd like going forward. Rehearsing the first two sentences beforehand, in writing or out loud, makes it much easier to stay calm.

Before the conversation

A simple structure

  1. Intention: "I want to talk about something because I care about us."
  2. What happened: "When the plan changed last minute on Saturday…"
  3. How you felt: "…I felt let down, like I wasn't a priority."
  4. What you'd like: "Next time, could you let me know earlier?"
  5. Invite them in: "How did it look from your side?"

Rehearse it first

Write the first two sentences and say them out loud. Practicing with a friend, or with an AI companion that can play the other person, makes the real conversation feel familiar instead of frightening.

During the conversation

After

Write a few lines about how it went and what you'd keep or change. Hard conversations get easier with practice.

How WeWow helps

In WeWow, you can talk it through with a circle of AI friends first: one helps you find the words, another plays devil's advocate, and they check in after to see how it went.

If you're struggling right now. An app, AI or not, is not emergency help. If you feel unsafe or are thinking about ending your life, reach a person now: 988 (call or text) in the US and Canada, Samaritans 116 123 in the UK and Ireland, Lifeline 13 11 14 in Australia, 1737 (call or text) in New Zealand, or your local emergency number.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start a hard conversation?

Open with your intention: 'I want to talk about something because I care about us.' It lowers defensiveness before you get to the hard part.

What if they get defensive?

Slow down, repeat back what they said, and come back to how you felt. You can also pause and continue later; you don't have to finish in one go.

Should I text or talk in person?

For big or emotional topics, talking (in person or on a call) is usually better because tone comes through. Text can work to ask for a time to talk.
